Prepping for Your Fall Mini Session
A few tips to help you feel ready (and relaxed!) before our time together
Fall in Wisconsin is pure magic. The colors, the crisp air, the cozy layers—it’s one of my favorite times to photograph families. Mini sessions are short and sweet (usually about 15 minutes), which makes them perfect for capturing this season of life without overwhelming your schedule or your kids.
But because they go by quickly, a little preparation can really help make the most of our time together. Here are a few tips I always share with families before a mini session:

1. Try to Arrive Early
I know getting everyone out the door can feel like a small miracle, but arriving 10–15 minutes early can make such a difference. It gives you time to find parking, get everyone settled, and maybe even take a few deep breaths before we start. Mini sessions run on a tight schedule, and I want to make sure we can use every minute for connection and fun—not scrambling.
2. Dress for the Weather (Layers Are Your Friend)
Fall in the Milwaukee area can be unpredictable. One moment it’s sunny and warm, and the next there’s a chill in the air. Dressing in layers—like cardigans, vests, or cozy scarves—means we can roll with whatever the weather decides to do that day. And bonus: textured layers always photograph beautifully!

3. Bring a Little Bribe (No Shame Here)
Kids do great in mini sessions, especially when there’s something to look forward to. A little treat—think fruit snacks, mini marshmallows, or something small and not-too-messy—can go a long way. We can even turn it into a fun game or reward. I’m not above singing a silly song either if it helps get those genuine smiles!

4. Keep Outfits Simple and True to You
No need for matchy-matchy perfection here. Pick outfits that coordinate and feel like you. The goal is for your photos to reflect your personalities, your relationships, and this moment in time. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, that confidence and ease will shine through in your photos.
5. Let Go of “Perfect”
Some of my favorite images happen when things don’t go perfectly—when a little one starts exploring the leaves or when you all end up laughing at something unexpected. Those are the moments that tell the story of your family, just as you are. I’ll guide you when needed, but I also love stepping back and letting your natural dynamic unfold.
